Tiny Empires?

So, a lot of my friends play this little turn-based, go-anywhere game in SL™ called Tiny Empires. I bought it, and it turns out I quite like it. It’s a little diversion that you only really have to glance at every 3 minutes, so it’s a nice thing to have there while you’re hangin’ out & chattin’ with friends, or dancin’ or what have you.

However, I did not expect so many folks to take this TE thing quite so seriously. Apparently I have already grievously offended people that I have never even met, and I also have run into my fair share of pushy folks, who love to IM me out of the blue with “Oh, but I am so super-special and my line is the best in all of TE.” (No, I won’t be naming any names. Not that anyone reads this, but I’m sure if they happened to stumble on my post, they’d know who they were.)

In the way of explanation about whose service I’m sworn to in TE, my liege is a friend of mine. One of my very best friends. No matter what gold you offer me, no matter what land you throw my way, it doesn’t matter to me. My liege in TE is my friend and friends > all. Additionally, I have just one subject (which is ok with me for the time being) and said subject is my boyfriend. Don’t expect him to haul off and leave me, either. :p In short, if you really want to get me in your line, you’re going to have to bribe my liege. Or possibly his liege. Or possibly theirs. Nothing personal, I’m sure your TE lineage is fine and all…. :)

Some Things That Drive Me Just A Lil Crazy

… about Second Life®.

1. It used to be that when you had a failed teleport, you got a little error message that told you “Could not teleport” and asked that you wait a few minutes and try again. Sometimes it’d “break” stuff, but more often than not if you waited a few minutes and tried again, you got to your destination just fine. Now, you just get logged out after waiting a few minutes for it to up and decide that your teleport isn’t going to work. Nevermind that you’ve already realized that it’s not going to work and started cussing at teleports again, because you know you’re going to get logged out.

2. Windlight just crashes constantly on login if you have a G15 and you’re actually running its Profiler & LCD software. I know, I know, Windlight is in First Look. I’m okay with turning off my G15’s software, I just can’t help but resent it a tiny bit that I have to. :)

3. New residents who hang out at large shops and quietly (IM) everyone in the vacinity for L$. I mean, I’ve been known to give random people a few L$ to get something nice now and then, but I prefer it to be because I opt to do so, not because I’ve been asked begged. It’s not that I don’t get that it can be difficult to get started in SL™, because I do. There are a lot of very fine retailers who have new resident kits that are free - either for up to 30 days or up to 14 days, or what have you. You just need to know where to look, and I recommend checking out Fabulously Free in SL™ and SL™ Free*Style. Or you can check Fashion Planet feed for updates from both of those places and many others.

4. The new “improved” login screen that looks like complete ICK in my honest opinion. I liked the thick blue bar at the bottom of the login screen that seperated the actual login form from the rest of it. I’m not really that big a fan of the rest of the login page in either version, although announcements are good to have. It’s slow-loading most of the time, though, and all I really want is to see what announcements may be there and then go straight to login.

Update: The login screen is … back to ‘normal’ for the time being. And last night, when I had my first failed teleport of the evening, I did not get logged out, I got the failed teleport, try again message. \o/

Update 2: Apparently, that teleport thing was a fluke.

My Partner: A Love & More Love Relationship.

A long time ago … in a galaxy not-so-far away, actually … I met the most wonderful guy. I met him in SL™, and truth be told if I hadn’t met him there, I might not have ever met him, because he lives about half a world away from me.

His name was (and is) Vortex Saito. Although he himself hadn’t been in world that much longer than me, he took time to help me learn quite a few things - and he’s still teaching me new stuff to this day, if I’m honest! Taught me how to deal with being griefed (put in cages), taught me the basics of building and texturing. And perhaps most importantly, taught me how a person should really be treated by their significant other.

Windlight: A Love-Hate Relationship

Sunset @ Chi I adore Windlight for its possibilities. I love how customizable it is. I love how pretty the skies and lighting can be.

I hate how buggy it is. I hate how much it crashes. I hate the newly-introduced black bands that appear in my sky. I hate how you can’t get past the login screen more than half the time these days - not without bypassing it entirely by passing command line parameters through your shortcut. I love how by now, the Windlight team @ Linden Lab™ have to know about the login screen crashes, but they don’t say a word about it anywhere, or give anyone any advice about how to deal with it. I resent certain Lindens very arrogant and condescending attitude about residents concerns with Windlight. (Insert-scowl-here.)

I do understand that a First Look is not a finished product. I understand that they are hoping for user input and bug reports. I also notice how the bug reporting tool that automatically pops up after you crash is completely non-functional these days. But I suppose that’s what JIRA is for.

I really do love Windlight’s potential but right now, some of its “showstoppers” (at least in my opinion) are really driving me up a wall…
